My Students
We live in a culture-rich, money-poor community where the traditional lifestyle has been preserved for hundreds of years. The three cultures (Spanish, Native American and Anglo) that inhabit Taos have all coexisted peacefully for many generations. TISA is a small public charter school that serves a low-income population of diverse cultures. We rely on fundraisers as a means to enhance students' learning experience and help them grow as contributing members of our small town. Our students love sports and are great team players! After 6 years we have finally been able to move into our new school, it took a lot o helpful community members, fundraisers and good ol'rolling up of shirtsleeves to make our new school happen. Now we need a basketball court. Our students are inventive and able to play anywhere (spent the last 2 years playing hoops in the parking lot of a plumbing company) but we want them to have what all the other public schools in town have a real court and a real team.
My Project
Our school has finally found a permanent home, after many years, hundreds of volunteer hours and helpful hands, we have the classrooms, teachers, tech, books and fabulous kiddos now we need a real basketball court, the students could start a TISA JV Basketball team if they had a DuraPlay Half Court, Mammoth 60" In-Ground Basketball hoop, some balls and a few Pinnies. We have a large population of high-risk students from very low-income homes, basketball is the way they de-stress in a healthy life-affirming way. Hoops for Hope is the name because each and every child deserves the same equipment, tools, and leaders that pave the way for them to be contributing, successful and happy members of our special town. We know we are hoping for a lot but we think we're worth it!
