My students need basketball equipment because we lost a lot during Hurricane Harvey. My school was forced to start late due to the fact that we received 3 feet of water inside our campus.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school in Houston Texas where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students are faced with many obstacles that children at their age shouldn’t have to endure. The students still keep a smile on their faces no matter what life has thrown at them this year.
I have the ability to coach 15 of the best young men you can possibly meet in the 7th grade.
They are becoming leaders around the school and having an impact on the other 7th graders around campus. Day after day I demand more from them on the court and the classroom but I have yet to find a challenge they have yet to overcome.
My Project
I feel like the basketball equipment will allow my students to keep playing basketball without worrying about other things. The backpacks will allow my players to train like other kids at other schools. A lot of the student's school work gets ruined from the sweat of their clothes. The basketball tights allow my players to keep playing and focus on the game. The school has seen how basketball has turned around the culture of the entire 7th grade class.
Basketball has given my boys something to keep their mind off of the devastation that Hurricane Harvey has caused the city.
I know basketball will save the lives of some of these boys like it saved the lives of many of my friends. Basketball can teach them different values such as obedience, discipline, and responsibilities.
