My Kindergarten students love to shoot baskets at recess. However, they become easily frustrated when they cannot make a basket using the traditional baskets on our playground. By providing them with portable hanging basketball hoops, my students can gain confidence in their shooting ability.
We live in a rural community and attend a K-12 school.
Our classroom is a traditional one and we are lucky to have PE and Music everyday. We also have recess two times a day, which I feel greatly increases my students physical activity. Because we are a K-12 school, many of my students attend the high school games to watch older siblings, neighbors or just to support our school. Our teams have been fairly successful and the high school athlete have become mentors for many of the younger students. My students want to play basketball like they see the older students do. We are a close knit community with a lot of pride in our school and community.
My Project
Many of my Kindergarten students attend the high school basketball games with their families. They love to shoot baskets at recess, but find it frustrating when the hoops are so high. For many of my students, recess is the only exercise they get each day, besides PE. Many of them do not have access to basketball hoops at home. With the national emphasis on decreasing childhood obesity and encouraging more active play for children, we also need to provide the resources for the kids to use. I also have a special needs child in my class that LOVES to shoot the basketball. This would also benefit him to develop not only ball skills, but increase his interacting with others.
I want to provide my students with the knowledge that keeping fit is just as important as learning how to read to add numbers.
Outdoor activity is a life long skill, and playing basketball can be fun at any level and can be played with anyone. Unfortunately, a lot of students do not play outside once the get home. I want to provide them with as many activities as I can at school. I believe that the better physically fit students are, the better they will perform in the classroom.
