This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students will be exploring how animals interact with their environment in Science class, and I wanted to provide my students the opportunity to get a close look at what owl's eat with owl pellets and tweezers. By becoming student ornithologists, students can get a first hand look at an owl's diet, and how their diet can have a direct or indirect effect on the diversity of a population in a particular ecosystem.

I want students to think critically as they explore the owl's food sources, and the effects of an increase/decrease in the prey population by dissecting owl pellets in the classroom.

Students will research the owl's diet by dissecting regurgitated pellets of fur while trying to identify the undigested parts of the prey. This will be a culminating activity in our Populations and Resources unit in our middle school curriculum. I want to provide students with a real-world experience, and an introduction into biological practice and research studies.
