My students need books to encourage and entice them to get lost in the adventure of a story. Read-alouds provide
opportunities that not only provide entertainment and enjoyment, but also include rich experiences for teaching literacy.
I am a teacher that is moving from 4th grade to 2nd grade, so my classroom library needs an update. I do not know anything about my new students that will be joining me in the fall, but I am already hard at work planning an inspiring, inviting, and encouraging classroom environment for them. Second grade is an age where solidifying reading skills is critical as students cross that bridge from learning how to read to reading to learn.
I have been at my current school for 4 years, so I know from past experience that my students will come to me with a vast spectrum of reading skills.
They will range from significantly below grade level readers to above grade level, so I need to have an array of books at their fingertips to encourage their love for reading.
My Project
I am moving from 4th grade to 2nd grade and feel the need to build my classroom library with updated books for my younger readers. Interactive read aloud time will be a critical component of my Reading instruction under the Balanced Literacy model. Interactive read aloud time is one of the most exciting and engaging learning activities in the primary classroom.
The purpose of an interactive read aloud is to provide opportunities for students to engage with texts through listening and discussion to promote deeper understanding about the meaning of texts.
They can also learn skills and strategies to use in their own reading. These books will be shared with students and then placed in our classroom library for students to interact with and enjoy time and time again.
