Help me give my students a copy of this gripping story of a young girl from Lithuania whose family is taken from their home during WWII, Between Shades of Gray.
78% of students are on free or reduced-price lunch. We have a very diverse student population. My students need a positive role model and a safe environment. They love technology and their friends.
Middle School is a difficult time for many students and I want my classroom to be a break from the drama and stress in their lives.
I want to create a place of respect, care, learning, creativity, and fun. They also need a place to discuss hard things that are relevant to their lives today.
My Project
My students are often reluctant readers. I want to introduce them to books that help them get excited about reading. I want them to have a copy in their hands as we read together in class of the book, Between Shades of Gray.
The themes of love and hope are so encouraging to students.
They are astonished by the selfless acts of love and the hope that these characters have through some horrific times. Their compassion for people who are mistreated really comes through as they study the history of Stalin and the Great Purge. I am so excited to dig into this story to see how it impacts my students this year.
