I teach in an urban school that has a high poverty rate as well as a high Hispanic population. My school is a Title l school that is 100% free lunch with many of our students taking home food backpacks over the weekends.
Because of poverty and limited English skills, the majority of my students are below grade level in reading and math.
They lack fundamental skills necessary for success; however, they are very eager to learn. They simply need extra resources that are fun and engaging.
My students struggle with reading and as a result, are reluctant to read independently. They need materials that will allow them to be successful before they are willing to tackle more difficult texts.
Graphic novels are a fun and highly engaging way of getting kids excited about reading.
Students will not only be reading, but they will be building fluency and comprehension skills as well. This will allow them to build confidence and self-esteem.
These books will also make a great addition to our classroom take-home library. Students will have the opportunity to take these books home in order to read with their family.
