My students need Leveled Books to compliment the C.I.A (Collect, Interpret, Apply) Units of study we cover in our Reading/ELA block and promote independent reading skills.

My Students

I teach third grade in an inner-city school. The students here come from a variety of economic backgrounds and ethnically diverse cultures. 100% of children receive free breakfast and lunch. Almost 60% of the children do not speak English as their first language. There is a multitude of languages spoken within the families. Our school serves students in grades PK-6 and provides a rigorous curriculum, dedicated teachers, and a safe learning environment. My students are such a huge part of my life. Teachers know that our job does not leave us the minute we walk out of school. We worry, we laugh and we get to know a great deal about our students. We try to reach our students in a way that will leave a lasting impression. Many of our students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful.

My Project

Book Clubs are an essential part of our daily Literacy program. These books are leveled according to students' independent reading levels. These books compliment the C.I.A. (Collect, Interpret, Apply) Units of study we use in our daily teaching.

Leveled books promote independent reading and expose students to themes, ideas, and knowledge sources that are foundational to the work they will be continuing through upper grades.

Students feel empowered and are motivated when they are able to read independently. They take pride in having their own copy of a book that is being used by other students. Having their own copy allows them to refer to the book for higher order thinking skills and participate in book group discussions.
