Hooked on Reading: Decodable Books for Older Students

My Project

I teach 5-12 special education in rural Alaska. I work with a wide variety of students throughout the day, most of which struggle significantly when it comes to reading. Many of my students are at a beginning reading level, despite being in higher grades.

In order to provide robust reading instruction, I need decodable books that will be interesting to older students.

Most books that are at my students' reading levels, especially my early readers, are not age appropriate. My middle schoolers don't want to read books that look like they are written for kindergarteners. However, the books they find interesting are too difficult for them to read independently. As a result, they often avoid reading altogether. Reading books is so impactful when it comes to building vocabulary and comprehension.

I need books that are interesting for older students, but are written in a way that allows them to practice the phonetic strategies we have been learning. I have a small set of decodable books in my classroom, and I love the way they help my students build confidence. Some of my students who read them had never finished an entire book before! We were able to celebrate that win together. Help me provide that same opportunity to all my students and help them see that reading can be fun.
