I was a bit worried when I first posted this project that I may not be able to get it funded because it isn't the most flashy or exciting. For many this project may not look like much, but for me and my students, it is majorly important. These books and the accompanying activity guides help me create tailor made lessons for my students targeting the foundational reading skills they need. It can be very difficult finding appropriate materials that suit the reading level and age / interest level of my students. I never want to present them with materials that make them feel bad about themselves or their reading abilities. Having these books allows my students to read age-appropriate stories at their level. \r\nI could go on about how these books impact my teaching or how the activity guides target specific skills in the science of reading, but instead let me share with you a story. I have a student who has a specific learning disability in reading. This student, let's call her Jess, is very intelligent but struggles a lot with reading. Because of your donations, I was able to give Jess a book on her level to read during class. For the first time, Jess was able to read a book independently and participate in class silent reading time. This small step goes a very long way in helping her build confidence and not feel so isolated from her peers. It was a huge win for both of us. Simple stories like that are why I do what I do. Thank you for being a part of it. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you supporting my kids and the work I do here. Since I have set it up in my classroom, my small shelf of place-based books (Yup'ik, Alaskan, and indigenous stories) have drawn a lot of attention, and not just from my students! Elders, other teachers, our educational support personnel, and even our school secretary were so excited to see these stories representing their history and culture. Several of the books are currently already on loan to other teachers for their personal reading or for them to incorporate into their classes. When I showed these books off to my students, they were so excited. They immediately asked if they could switch out the books they were reading for these. They were so excited to start reading these stories to connect to the characters or learn more about their culture. Several students asked if they could take them home to read over the weekend (which they have never done before!) In a world where most media reflects a culture other than their own, my students are now able to come into my classroom and find stories that represent them. Just having the books on my shelf helps with the climate in my room. Thank you for showing my students that they are not alone in their experiences. Thank you for showing them that their history and culture are valued, even by those who are not a part of it. Thank you for showing them that there are people that care about them and their connection to their heritage. We are thrilled to have these new math manipulatives in the classroom. As a 6-12 Special Education teacher / Interventionist, I teach a wide range of students with a wide range of abilities. I have used these materials, the ones YOU helped purchase, in nearly every one of my math groups. We love using the games to work on fluency with basic facts such as addition and subtraction. It's so fun the kids almost forget they are learning! The various manipulatives have helped make lessons with counting, patterns, and sorting so much more engaging. We aren't counting snap cubes anymore, now we are counting octopuses and crabs! The balance scale has been instrumental in helping my students understand the concept of \"less\" and \"more\". On the other end of the spectrum, I have been using the algebra tiles to help my high school students visualize more complex problems, including those with negative numbers. I could go on all day. \r\nWhat is most important is that you know that these materials are bringing joy to me and my students. Everytime I open my math cabinet and see all the bright colors and possibilities, it makes me smile. My goal is to move math from something scary to something that can be fun. We are thrilled to have these new whiteboards in the classroom. When I returned from summer break to find these materials waiting for me, I was elated. I have used these whiteboards almost every single day of our 23 school days so far. My kids love the paddle shape of the boards so they can hold up their answers. The blank sides help students in math draw diagrams and show their work, while the lined sides help my small group reading kids write sight words and sentences. I love using the Elkonin boards for my early reading groups. The kids like the magnetic function of the boards as we move the pieces to represent each sound in a word. The new markers have been a major help, since most of my previous markers were dry. Plus they have built in erasers! Speaking of erasers, the pack of white board erasers has been a great addition to class. No more using tissues or shirt sleeves! All of this has been made possible by your generosity. Your support has made a bigger impact than you can imagine.\r\n\r\nFrom the moment the snacks arrived, my students lit up with excitement. Many of them asked, \"Are these really for us?\"—it was such a touching moment to see their faces light up with joy and surprise. For some of my students, this is the first time they've had access to consistent snacks during the school day, and it's made a world of difference.\r\n\r\nWe've incorporated the snacks into our daily routine, especially during longer work sessions and test prep periods. One specific moment that stands out was during a group project on community heroes. The students were deeply engaged, working collaboratively and creatively, and having snacks available helped keep their energy up and their focus sharp. Sometimes I even have students who I do not teach stop by my room just to pick up a fidget. My students have stated multiple times how much they love the fidgets and how they have helped them focus in class. I've had students tell me the fidgets have helped them to stop behaviors like picking at their skin and hair. My students are always so respectful of the fidgets but still, over time things have broken or disappeared. Prior to your generous donations, my fidget tool box was looking pretty sparse. \r\n\r\nWhen I told my students that we were getting new fidgets because some people online had donated them, they were shocked. \"They don't even know us!\" they said. I explained that although our donors do not know them, they still cared enough to invest in their learning. They were a bit skeptical, but excited nonetheless. Shipping to rural Alaska is often slow and unpredictable. My kids asked me almost every day, \"when will the new fidgets get here?\" The day they arrived, I put them in the tool box and waited. My students noticed as soon as they walked in, \"The new fidgets came!\" They all rushed to the box to inspect and pick their favorites. Since then, I have enjoyed watching them use them in class, quietly squeezing a stress ball under the table as they do their work or messing with the tangles while listening to a lecture. \r\n\r\nIt may seem like a small thing, but your donation is meaningful in so many ways. In addition to the practical benefits such as increased focus and emotional regulation, when students pick up these fidgets to use they are reminded that they are loved and cared for. Not only by their community here, but by total strangers who have invested in them. The fidgets tell them that people care not just about their academics, but also about their comfort and their needs.
