Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine not knowing when your next meal will be? Would you still have a positive attitude if an older sibling was bullying you? Despite struggles in their everyday lives, my students come to school every day eager to learn. They are even more eager to learn to read!
I have 24 first grade students in my classroom.
However, more students may join our class at any time because children enter the district at various times throughout the year. My students are energetic, witty, and determined to succeed. They are hungry for knowledge. Their eyes light up each time they come to a new understanding. Our classroom, located in New York City, is warm and welcoming despite it being in a high poverty school. Our school is constantly seeking ways to improve to keep up with the Common Core standards and 21st century learning in our K-5 building. However, this task has not been easy. Our school lacks funds. The money that we do have from the state goes to providing food for our students who would not receive it in their own homes. As a first year teacher with high hopes of helping each of my students reach their goals, this has certainly created a difficult obstacle.
My Project
As a first year teacher in an inner-city high poverty school, I do not have a lot of materials. I am full of ideas and I know materials would be helpful in order to help my students make the most of first grade. I am asking for tools to help me create engaging Common Core aligned reading centers. In particular, I am requesting I Can! reading center activities, Common Core aligned reading and writing center games, and language analysis center materials. These materials will allow me to create more meaningful phonics lessons. My students will be able to have hands-on centers where they can manipulate vowels and consonants to create new words. My students rarely get new things, so I know they will truly appreciate these materials if we are fortunate enough to receive them. I tell my students every day that in order to become smarter you must read every day. I want them to be hooked on reading through these fun centers. This will help my students to have a successful first grade year
I became a teacher so that I could pay forward the acts of kindness that others have done for me in the past.
I want to help children, and I know that you do too. By making a small donation, you have the ability to make a difference in the lives of my students. My students will learn that when you work hard, your hard work will pay off. There are good people out there in this world who recognize hard work and will reward these efforts. Please help me to help my students soar to success!
