Learning physics can be done in several ways, from simply reading a book to the extreme of actually throwing oneself out of a plane. My urban students need exciting ways to engage with the physical world through engaging labs, but they go to a school district that can't afford updated textbooks.
I have the privilege of working with 100 talented, motivated students in a large urban district in the Midwest.
My students have a passion for science and attend a innovative school that focuses on science and medicine in the curriculum. We have set rigorous academic goals for our students, and they attend school an extra hour daily and an extra four weeks each school year.
My students take college prep physics or AP physics in their 11th grade year. They are determined to go to college and succeed in society through their academic endeavors.
My Project
It has always been my goal to provide my students with the most interactive and exciting strategies to learn physics. I have a goal of not only preparing them for college physics, but having them share my personal passion for the world of physics. My students are hard working and typically don't have top of the line materials from which to learn. They deserve the best materials science education can provide, because I know they will utilize them to their full potential.
My students need 8 Hooke's Law apparatus, 10 spring sets, 8 hooked mass sets, and an Atwood's machine to do labs about the motion of objects. This proposal will provide my students with two lab experiences and several live demonstrations. It will give the students a hands-on lab involving springs and masses to explore Hooke's law, a very important principle in physics. There is also a demonstration Atwood's Machine which will show students the principle of complex force interactions.
I depend on donors like yourself to provide my students with the materials they need to get the best public education possible.
Without your help, we'll learn about springs by reading a book. Please help to make physics come alive for my students!
