Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I'm reading J books"! This is a statement that one of my motivated 1st grade readers says during reading time. Other students also will proudly share their reading level when asked. My students are very aware of their goal: to read K books by the end of 1st grade!

My 1st graders are students in an inner-city Maryland public school.

Our school is a small school in a low-income neighborhood. The students live in an area where they witness things that can sadden adults, but my students are optimistic and goal-oriented. They are a close-knit group of kids who enjoy music, science, and reading. They have made so many wonderful accomplishments already this school year and they just keep on improving!

My Project

Unfortunately, my students are making so much progress that we are beginning to outgrow our class library! We use guided reading books, which are leveled in order of text complexity. 1st grade is a year where a student's reading ability begins to sky-rocket! My students are rapidly increasing the level at which they read. In fact, I have several students who are ready for 2nd grade books! Most of the leveled books that we currently have are "A" and "B" books, which are appropriate for kindergarten children. This means that my top readers do not have appropriately leveled books to read independently. These leveled books will help increase their love of reading. It will also increase their reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills, simply by allowing them to practice with the "right" books! Reading is something that we do all the time, so the moments when these books will impact my students are too numerous to count!

My students are always reading!

One of our class policies is "I am always working". The students are allowed to choose books from our library that they can keep in their desks for when they finish work or are waiting for a new activity. They always enjoy reading nonfiction books and learning new information. These books will help to inspire my students in unimaginable ways! The more books they read, the more knowledge they have! As a teacher, I can think of no better gift for them!
