My students need an assortment of books for a classroom library, and a copy of the book Wonder for every fifth grade student to complete a grade level project.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can my students become proficient readers when they don't have the books to help achieve this goal? I am looking to establish a fifth grade classroom library that is accessible to multiple reading levels, and a copy of the book Wonder for each fifth grade student to use during a read aloud.
My students are great kids who are often growing up in less than ideal circumstances.
Many of my students come from broken homes and they witness violence in their streets. My school has many students living in poverty, a high level of students receive special educations services, and English is not the first language of a large group of students. My class is a mixed group of learners who like to explore different genres of reading. My library consists of books that have been donated, but are outdated and in disrepair. Research shows that if students read daily they are more successful. In order to foster the interest, students need the opportunity to select books which will encourage them to become "hooked on books." This project will allow for meaningful reading by our students, which will ensure their journey to become lifelong learners.
My Project
I am seeking enough copies of the outstanding book Wonder to do an entire fifth grade read aloud simultaneously. Throughout the school year we will use the theme from Wonder of "kindness, courage, and friendship," to foster cohesion among the students. The students will use the book each month to do team building activities. I am also building a classroom library that has a wide selection of books for the students to choose from. Challenging a student to read a variety of genre will make them a well rounded reader and student. My goal is to have all students read at least four books from each genre during the school year. Hopefully the students will be excited and want to share with their peers which will create a love of reading.
The donations will give my students the confidence needed to become great readers which in turn makes great leaders.
It will also enable the fifth grade class to go through the school year as a united group. My classroom library will improve by increasing the levels of rigor and the selection of text. Without this opportunity the students will not be exposed to a rich collection of books. If funded, the students' lives will be significantly changed.
