This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

For my students, reading is not easy. When things are hard, they are often not enjoyable. I know that the best way to get my students to read every day is to help them develop a love of reading. As a Reading Specialist, I support students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities, many of whom are currently performing far below grade level. For them, reading is often a struggle, and just plain not fun. But when they find a book that interests them, reading becomes less of a chore.

When struggling readers discover that a book they like is part of a series, this can lead to a love of reading, because the story they enjoyed doesn’t have to end yet.

I was overjoyed when one of my reluctant readers couldn’t stop reading Stink: Solar System Superhero. He finally found a book that interested him! But when he finishes the book, will he go back to being a reluctant reader? Not if there’s ANOTHER book about Stink to read!

I want to give my students high-interest chapter books that are part of a series, so they will continue to be excited to read. I’ve selected a mix of classic chapter books by authors like Judy Blume and Beverly Clearly along with some more modern stories like Stink and Judy Moody and Ivy & Bean.
