This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Though our high school has a "Maker Space" room, it is limited to Cricut and paper crafts. Many hobbies and skills are difficult to learn and discover because of the expenses! This is especially true for our Title I (low income) high school.

Help turn our Maker Space into a place of exploration where students can learn and consider new skills and hobbies!

I have requested a sewing machine so we can expand our Maker Space for all students at our high school.

Many students have expressed interest through their sophomore and senior "passion projects" to learn how to sew and mend clothing. Besides a sewing machine, I have requested a pattern-making library book for how-to sew clothes, and the basics for the sewing machine, namely thread, bobbins, and sewing machine needles. These items are needed for the students to get started. I'm hoping scrap fabrics can be donated by our school community for practice!

As students constantly ask for opportunities to learn life-skills, sewing can provide a path to learning a homemaking craft. My hope is these hobbies and skills will continue to be developed and pursued post graduation. Not only are hobbies similar to clubs in that they provide opportunities to boost social and emotional health for students; but, hobbies such as sewing can also be an artistic outlet.

Lastly, I'm hoping as an event to partner with "Days for Girls" to pursue service projects using this sewing machine and tools. Our Society of Female Scholars club is eager to contribute to women's health efforts by sewing re-usable menstrual pad kits.
