Hook, Line, and Sinker: Motivating Struggling Readers

My Students
We are an inner city, minority-majority school of racial and ethnic diversity. Our students are 85% low income, almost 10% are homeless, and 27% are special education students. My students come from all over the world, and 76% are learning English.
Many of my students do not have access to computers or books in their homes and the school library is there access point to books of any kind.
My students are eager learners, but need materials that are accessible to them in readability and subject matter.
My Project
Middle school is a critical time for my students to develop as readers. In middle school they develop the foundation to become life long readers and learners or to never read another book after high school graduation. A quarter of my student population is reading below grade level. Unfortunately, we do not have many books that are accessible to these students.
Research has proven that the way to become a better reader is to read.
This project will provide books that are accessible to the students who struggle with reading at my school. If they have successful experiences with reading, they will read more. Success breeds success, especially for students who struggle with reading.
