My Students

I teach 6th grade Language Arts and 6th-8th grade Reading Intervention. The students who share my classroom range from the highest-achieving to those most in need of inspiration in order to discover the love of reading and increase their achievements. They are spirited and culturally diverse middle schoolers, with equally-diverse learning needs. My students have big ideas, are eager learners, and have ambitious goals for their future, and I am passionate about my quest to help them meet those goals!

Critical readers are critical thinkers--in a rigorous environment where students are challenged to engage, question, and think with passion, students are preparing for life.

Every day, I am asked several times, "Mrs. Eastman, can you help me find a good book?" My students want to read, learn, and grow. As with most middle schoolers, they are beginning to broaden their horizons and become aware of issues in the world around them. Often, they find the issues they are most passionate about in the books they read, and, they, too, know how important reading is to their future.

My Project

Many of us remember the books that hooked us into reading. We realize those books did more than just capture our interest and imagination; they helped us see the world in a different light and, in many ways, they made us who we have become. For students who are non-readers, who struggle to get through a book and have not yet had the opportunity to let themselves become carried away by the people, magic, adventure, and ideas that lie hidden in the pages, it is vital that we work to help them have that powerful encounter with their "just right" book.

Research has shown, classrooms with a large library of books that are readily available to students have more students reading more frequently and with more success.

According to Richard Allington in What Really Matters for Struggling Readers, "...classrooms that were best able to put appropriate books into kids' hands had hundreds of titles available in the classroom collection." In middle school, to accommodate for the diverse reading levels and interests of my students, it is imperative that I have current, engaging books at a wide range of reading levels. The books that have been selected for this project are books that are culturally relevant and relatable to my student population; books that are a part of a series that will captivate readers and leave them wanting more; books with valuable themes lending to deep thinking; and, of course, they are books that match the levels of the readers in my classes. The goal of this project is to encourage the reading habit in students, so they can climb the reading ladder to more and more complex text and to success. One book may be all it takes to start a chain reaction!
