My Students

"He that plants trees, loves others besides himself." Thomas Fuller If I can bring discovery with hands-on learning to my classroom, all students will reap the benefits of real world application. Please plant seeds in my classroom to help my students learn the joy of discovery.

I have the opportunity to teach 4th grade students ELA and science.

My students are eager to learn and enjoy science experiments. Hands on experiments give my students a love and eagerness for learning. My school is a Title I school where around 60% of our students receive free and reduced meals. Giving my students this opportunity to explore and discover in new ways would be a tremendous asset towards their education.

My Project

My students need an owl pellets kit, with dissection tools, and fifteen owl pellets and a pellet flip chart to learn about the food chain and food webs of owls. My 4th graders this year need to understand the flow of energy through a food web and food chain beginning with sunlight and including producers, consumers, and de-composers. While dissecting the owl pellets, discussions, and explorations will facilitate learning and understanding. The flip charts will help aid in researching which rodents the owl ate and understanding the owl’s food chain/web and its flow of energy. My students will also learn about prey, predator, and consumers from all these supplies.

My students are not exposed to this type of discovery often.

I can incorporate this activity across the curriculum. As I stated earlier, I also teach ELA. Once we finish the experiment, my students can write and display their findings from the owl pellet. They can also explain about the owl's role in its community as a consumer and its interdependence on others. In math we can create graphs to show what types of rodents the owl consumed. I feel my students will benefit greatly from discovery.
