This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are as diverse as is our World. The majority are new immigrants whose families have fled countries in turmoil in order to escape war, famine and uncertainly. Others are from families who work in service-related jobs who have suffered significantly during COVID because of exposure to the disease and because their families' already meager income was reduced even more due to business closures and resulting job losses.
My students are curious, fun and eager to learn.
They enjoy hands-on discovery projects, especially in science. They appreciate opportunities that show them novel and unique aspects of learning, based on real-world events and pragmatic experiences they all have shared in their young lives.
What amazes me most about my students, is the infectious excitement they display when they grasp a new understanding and realize the personal possibilities this brings them. It gives me great hope that many of them will become the next generation of great American innovators and thinkers.
My Project
Using these Owl Pellet Kits, my students will have their first opportunity to conduct a "hands-on" investigation of a food chain. Owls regurgitate indigestible parts of their prey, including bones, feathers and fur. These are called “castings” or “pellets.” By dissecting and examining the pellets, my students will begin to understand an owl’s position in and the complexities of a food chain.
By developing their understanding of an owl's food chain, my students will be introduced to the links that exist between all living things and the challenges that arise from a break in any link.
This one investigation can form the basis of my student's concept of the environment, and the challenges they will face as our environment changes in the future.
