Using these Owl Pellet Kits, my students will have their first opportunity to conduct a "hands-on" investigation of a food chain. Owls regurgitate indigestible parts of their prey, including bones, feathers and fur. These are called “castings” or “pellets.” By dissecting and examining the pellets, my students will begin to understand an owl’s position in and the complexities of a food chain. By developing their understanding of an owl's food chain, my students will be introduced to the links that exist between all living things and the challenges that arise from a break in any link. This one investigation can form the basis of my student's concept of the environment, and the challenges they will face as our environment changes in the future.
