Honoring Our Veterans

My Students

Our art students come from a variety of socioeconomic, cultural, and artistic backgrounds. Some of our students come to us and have never created art. I work hard to incorporate art creation, aesthetics, art history, and art criticism into my students' lessons and make it my personal goal for these kids to enjoy walking into the art room to create! In our art room, we make connections to the core areas (math, reading, social studies, science and writing) so students see that art connects to many parts of our lives.

Our art students are always creating, doodling, drawing, sculpting, folding, carving, critiquing, analyzing, comparing and learning!

We are a busy classroom!

My Project

This year, after searching for creative and meaningful ways to honor our local veterans, I came across ceramic poppies online. I wanted to make them functional and a keepsake and wanted to be able to gift them to community members.

Each art student will create a ceramic poppy bowl with these supplies and gift it to local veterans on Veteran's Day - honoring our veterans in this special way will let them know of our utmost respect for their sacrifice for our country and community.

Students will learn about the significance of poppies and symbolism. We will use clay we already have in our classroom, and will learn about basic clay slab techniques in the process of bowl creation. We will use the heart cookie cutters for the petals. We will use a stencil for the center. After the poppies are fired in the kiln, we will use red and black glaze to finish them. I hope to put a note with each bowl. I am so excited to create these with my students!
