This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
These books will support cross-cultural understanding among high-school students, who need to see representation of diverse ethno-religious groups.
Currently, our students have poor understanding of contemporary Jewish life, either in the Americas, or in Israel.
As an Equity Focus School, we provide free meals to all, and most are Black, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multi-ethnic. Most are first- or second-generation immigrants, having struggled at one point to learn academic English well enough to participate in our Honors English Language Arts classes. There is little time or funding for anything besides essentials.
Currently, Jewish students feel unseen, and misunderstood. Their peers believe Jewish life fits a single American demographic, or that it ended with the Holocaust. Some are bullied because of misperceptions about their connections to Israel. Your donation to provide relevant literature in a variety of genres can help fix that.
