My Students

Please help us to purchase a cabinet to keep our prepared microscope slides safe from chips and damage. These supplies can be used year after year helping thousands to discover the hidden world the microscope reveals

My 9th grade science students attend an urban school.

Over 50 % qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite all the overwhelming obstacles to finding success, these self starting students are part of a unique program that allows students to graduate high school with an associates degree and a high school diploma. My aspiring high school students dream of becoming doctors, dentists, pathologists, anthropologists, or research scientists.

My Project

My students need slides that are not broken or chipped. Help us purchase a cabinet to maintain our slides for years to come so that thousands of students can benefit. My students regularly do a written assignment: You are shrunk to microscopic size and placed within a cell. Describe your new environment. In this assignment, we use the microscope slides to visualize and imagine the world of the cell. After examining the cell, students create computer photostories with images from the microscope and detailed descriptions of the cell parts about how they interact as if they were shrunk to microscopic !ize and placed in a cell. We compare the diversity of cells. Why does a muscle cell have so many mitochondria? Why does a plant cell need a chloroplast? Budgets are extremely tight in schools. Our microscope slides are stored in a manner that makes them difficult to find, use and they often get damaged. We are desperately needing a cabinet to store our prepared microscope slides so that they are not damaged.

Help us engage students in science.

You can be the difference. Help their dreams come true by creating hands-on science experiences. There are so many horrible stories about teens these days. My students are what is right with teens today. They work hard, study and dream big. When students do science, a career in science becomes possible.
