"Ms. K! I couldn't do my homework last night because I didn't have a ruler or crayons!"
Believe it or not, I hear this exclamation from my second graders on a routine basis. Often times, my seven- and eight-year olds are unable to complete their homework because they lack basic supplies like rulers, crayons, scissors, and glue.
I am a second grade Special Education teacher in Brooklyn and will be starting my seventh year of teaching in September. My school is a Title I school, and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch. I'm hoping to eliminate these homework excuses during this upcoming school year with your help.
I'd like to create 30 "Homework Helper" boxes for my new class of students. Using plastic pencil cases I already have in my classroom, I'd like to create boxes for each of my students containing all of the necessary homework supplies: rulers, crayons, glue, scissors, erasers, and pencil sharpeners. These boxes will be given to the students at the start of the school year to be used to complete any and all homework assignments throughout the year.
Your help will ensure that my students will be able to complete their homework on a regular basis. The lack of these basic supplies will no longer prevent my second grade students from turning in assignments and practicing important reading, writing, and math skills at home.
