My Students

Does anybody want to stay after school? Well, not really. As a teacher who really needs these children to stay, what can lure them in with a good attitude?

Reluctant students do the absolute minimum to just get by.

We want to motivate them to stay and realize their own potential. To do this, we have a homework club. It is a small population that has been invited by a teacher of the fourth grade. Most of these children are in our 40% poverty level, are below more than a grade level, and do not have a strong educational foundation at home. The fourth grade teachers want to halt this downward spiral and to give them a place to work with friends, add a little bit of guidance, and give them a snack to keep on track.

My Project

Now think about what happens to a hungry, growing, fourth grader, knowing full well he needs to get his work done and gets offered a terrific snack of his choosing while enjoying the company of peers. This is the recipe for a successful start to a school year for at-risk students. Can a snack do all of this? For the record, we kept all of our original invited students, plus added a couple more in the past years when we offered a snack.

When communities think of helping struggling families, they think of the high cost of food.

We help with that. As a teacher, we know the value of having breakfast and lunches available for these children. Studying and nutrition do go hand in hand. Let us continue to feed and nurture students especially when connecting schooling and success with after school programs. Let's begin with books and snacks and see how far it can take us!
