Homes for Reader's and Writer's Workshop!

My students need binders and dividers to organize their notes, essays and reader's workshop papers. This will help promote pride in their work, responsibility and organization in the class and throughout their school day.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school, LDMS, sits on the edge of Richmond, California. LDMS has a student population that largely consists of children of color and almost one-third of the students are English Language Learners. All of my students come from diverse countries, families, and socio-economic standings that lead to a rich cultural environment. However, due to the high poverty rate in my county, many students are not afforded the hands-on, extracurricular education that they deserve.

My goal is to create a curriculum that is hands-on, student-centered, and relevant to their lives.

I personally teach the upper levels of ELD which means my students are in my class for two periods a day. The longer class day allows more time to get into projects, create some art and have longer discussions about the real world.

My Project

This year I provided my students with paper folders to keep their work including writer's workshop, completed essays, notes, and their reading letters. These folders were loved to death -- to the point of them splitting in two and the pockets falling out. In addition, the folders do not provide the organization they need to feel proud of their work, not having a completed essay or project stuffed behind some "in progress ideas."

Not only will students will be able to learn valuable skills with the binders like being responsible for their work or learning to organize, but they will be able to have parts of their binder that they can show off their completed projects.

My students deserve to have the basics in the classroom and should be able to take pride in their learning regardless of if they can afford it. This will make many children feel like their work matters.
