This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As children get drawn to more and more gadgets and electronic devices, not much can compare to the numerous things students obtain in the reading of a good book.
I have a group of 65 6th grade students this year at a Title One school in Northern California.
Many of my kids come from low income households in which English is spoken as a second language. I have 30 of my students every morning for homeroom in the morning as well as for their core classes of math and science, and the rest for math and science and an enrichment elective.
My Project
I am requesting a large selection of new novels with which to assemble an updated classroom library for my students. Our school requires that homeroom be used for silent reading every morning and so I am eager to acquire the books that will excite and engage my students to read and continue reading all year.
I would like to set up a reward system for the students for each time they complete a book and encourage them to read books in their entirety. For this reason I am requesting sets so that in the even that students get drawn into a particular character or story line, they can continue with a set of books if they like.
Students gain so much from reading good books if only they had access to some that they enjoy.
Aside form the entertainment aspect of the story line, they take away grammar, spelling, and vocabulary lessons from reading. Please consider my class for this selection of books so that we can turn our whole homeroom class into avid readers this year.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
