Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an incredibly diverse population. They come from many different cultures and backgrounds. We have over 51 different languages other than English as a primary language spoken at home. Over 51 languages are spoken in our town. Our students work incredibly hard and are very attentive. Most of my students are preparing for college, some directly for a career, and a few for the military.
We are trying to create a community of tolerance, acceptance, and compassion within our school and our teams/clubs.
The school is so incredibly diverse (religion, ethnicity, socio-economic, single-parent homes, grandparent homes, etc.), with many immigrant families finding our town to be a wonderful, inviting home. In addition, we support the local homeless shelters, the homeless bus in a surrounding town, and our temporarily homeless students and families.
The high school has many varsity sports including football, baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, hockey, track and field, gymnastics, swimming, cross country, tennis, softball, wrestling, golf, Special Olympics, dance, and bowling.
Additionally I am a co-mentor for the Mechanical Mustangs FIRST Robotics Team. I work with the team on their team attributes awards, business plan, fundraising, and general science.
My Project
The concept of the Homeless Bus began by bringing food to the needy in a local urban town and then bringing the left overs to New York City. Now, the bus runs its route every Saturday night bringing food and necessities to about 200 homeless people. Previously, the homeless consisted mostly of individuals, but recently there has been an increase in entire families coming for help as per the leaders of the homeless bus organization. As a high school, we have adopted the homeless bus as one of our charities of choice.
This project is for fruit snacks and cookies, food which will be used in the creation of the dinners for our local homeless; these items are not perishable and the fruit snacks provide glucose to the individuals that they can eat throughout the week.
We have enough for five weeks worth of meals.
Thank you so much for supporting our students and their mission to help the local Homeless Bus.
