Homegrown Bookworms

Help me give my students books to practice targeted decoding skills at home. Decodable books like, Junior Learning and Classroom Library Collections, will help my kindergarteners learn responsibility through a borrow/return system while honing their reading skills.

My Project

Research has shown that students learn to read proficiently with direct teaching of skills in a logical order and multiple opportunities to practice those skills. Reading at school is not enough practice but decodables are not the kind of book most families have at home.

25 million students in the US cannot read proficiently, please help me ensure my students have multiple opportunities to practice their skills and grow their proficiency with their families.

My 5 year-old students will practice responsibility as they borrow a set of books, tailored specifically to the skills currently being worked on. Once a skill is mastered, students will trade their books and continue working towards proficiency. The more opportunities students have to use their decoding skills the more the skills become automatic and permanent.

Children are made readers in the laps of their parents but readers are made learners with a strong foundation of skills. Please help me create a library of books for my students to build their reading skills and begin the path toward becoming bookworms.
