The students who attend our school in Lawrence are so unique. Many of them are immigrant families (first or second generation) with varying family dynamics and financial situations. My students, or as I like to call them, my kids, often come to school tired, hungry, and unable to focus. A percentage of these students are also beginning to speak, read, and write in English simultaneously. The cards are stacked against these kids, but they continue to show up. They continue to smile and contribute. They continue to work. Students at our school are tenacious about a college-bound future!
My classroom is a small room only capable of teaching 16 students at one time. This room used to be somebody’s office. The items inside the classroom are “hand me downs” that are either too bulky or are falling apart. I have poured my heart, soul, and pocketbook into this classroom. Providing my students with new, sturdy, age-appropriate shelving will allow our space to feel quite a bit more comfortable and will unify our space. The new storage will also allow more space for students to spread out and find flexibility in their seating options. New storage will also allow me to grow our library!!
