What if someone had given us a chance to stretch our financial responsibility muscles before we got that first credit card in college? Values and habits that we develop as children follow us through our lives. We can have a monumental impact on the value students place on being financially literate.
Our student population is extremely diverse.
Over 40 languages and dialects are spoken in the homes of our students. Many are the first generation in their families born in the United States. They are excited to learn and ripe for new adventures in learning. I teach the future investors of our world economy. They are inquisitive, innovative, and crave complexity on a constant basis. They want to know why the world works the way it does and how to change it. They need to exercise their critical thinking skills and encounter authentic challenges. Sadly, most of these students have had little experience with financial literacy, yet they are curious and eager to have real-world experiences involving economics. They yearn to encounter an academic structure that satisfies their appetite for depth and breadth in learning.
My Project
I'd like to reach outside the four walls of our classroom. Our children are little citizens, and thus need to have the tools to be informed and effective in making decisions, thinking critically, and seeing multiple viewpoints. By using DynaMath in the classroom, we will receive brightly-colored, child-friendly magazines that provide rich, authentic texts allowing exploration of economics and math skills in a real-world context. Magazines will make math concepts less abstract while engaging students, and they can work out STEM challenges using new card stock. We received half of a class set of this magazine earlier in the year, and I would love each child in my class to have his or her own copy to problem solve and apply skills learned in practical ways. Grappling with complex issues and new discoveries will allow them to examine complex mathematical and economics concepts.
Having comfortable places to meet in small groups will make learning meaningful and engaging.
We have limited options for meeting as small groups in our classroom and a rug would provide that opportunity. The area rug will make their collaborative time inviting and warm as they convene to discuss their views and brainstorm their next steps in solving problems. They will have a safe space to take risks and share with peers as they meet together on their comfortable carpet, which will help build community in our classroom. Please help make our classroom a home.
