My Students

My dream for my students is for them to be able to pick up any book, read it, and hold a constructive conversation about it. A dream of every one of my students is having a book to hold on the city bus going home, at the kitchen table, or under the sheets of their bed.

My students live in South St.

Louis from a variety of homes. When you ask my students about the city library, most will tell you they have never been there, and even more do not have books at home. My students are great about borrowing the few books I have and returning them, but the idea of having fun extending activities to do with the books would be great! Providing them with a bag and a book every week with materials to make a puppet or start a diary would extend their reading interests so much.

My Project

My students need 10 tote bags and 33 books to read at home to increase their reading experience and embrace the love of reading. Reading Holes, Bunnicula or Wimpy Kid is a fun way to do this. My dream is that every Thursday the students would be given a bag to borrow with a book and activity that they could keep for 7 days. Having the books over the weekend would give them time to enjoy the books by themselves or with their family members. My students have many siblings, so not only would this project help my students, but it would get their siblings interested in reading also!

Providing these books and bags for my students will improve my students interests in books.

As each bag will have different activities (writing postcards, graphing, creating puppets), the students will be using many of Bloom's Higher Order Thinking Skills -along with increasing their reading ability and having fun doing it!
