This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What a lovely group of students we have the honor of teaching! Our kids are ten and eleven year old fifth graders in an urban district, many from families who are struggling financially. The majority of our students own few, if any books. Research indicates that a home library of twenty books can have a significant and positive impact on the literacy skills of children. We have a wonderful classroom and school library, but there is no real substitute for books that children have chosen for themselves and books that they treasure as their own. Every year, we strive for our students grow to be enthusiastic readers and thinkers. Please help us to achieve this goal.

My Project

Our fifth grade students love to read! As you can imagine, this is an ELA teacher's dream come true. Our classroom has a sufficient amount of books (for now), and the kids spend at least thirty minutes each weekday immersed in literature of their choice. It's genuinely lovely to witness.

What many of our kids don't have, however, are home libraries, or even books to call their own.

Books in the home has a significant correlation with student success. According to a study by Associate Professor Mariah Evans at the University of Nevada:

"Even a little bit goes a long way," in terms of the number of books in a home. Having as few as 20 books in the home still has a significant impact on propelling a child to a higher level of education, and the more books you add, the greater the benefit."
