Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at a school where 90% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students are aged 3-5 years old, and all have Individualized Education Plans. My students are curious, full of energy and life, and always eager to learn! They love learning new skills and are proud of their own successes and those of their peers. My ultimate goal is to give my students a positive learning experience in a school setting, setting the foundation for a love of learning, and a love of school.
Students learn best through hands-on experiences and through the process rather than always having to produce a product.
We are a classroom family learning patience, empathy, and acceptance for everyone.
My Project
Hands-on learning is an important way for students to learn by practicing skills they are learning and put their knowledge in action. Having hands-on activities such as Hand2Mind wooden block sets my pre-school aged students can use problem-solving skills to create block towers, sort by color, and count real objects while distance learning. Many of my families are choosing to have their children learn remotely when we return to school in a few weeks. Providing them with dry erase boards, alphabet and numeral cards to copy, flash cards with tweezers, pompoms, dice, and other hands-on manipulatives will allow all of my students to participate in learning activities whether they are in the classroom or participating via live stream.
Engagement through hands-on learning activities will help my students to become successful as they practice skills they will retain academic concepts such as counting, writing, and sorting.
Distance learning for pre-school aged students is difficult as we want to reduce the amount of screen time our little ones are exposed to, but with the pandemic, this is how we are communicating daily in our class. Providing all my students will hands-on kits that they can have at home, will assure me that we can all interact with the same materials even if we are not in the same physical space.
