Home Grown Learning for City Kids

My Students

The week before our school closed due to COVID-19, many families were rightfully worried about the health and wellbeing of their child. The decision to close schools was not made until Sunday evening, giving teachers and students no time to prepare for any sort of remote learning.

The week our school closed for students, the teachers came in to prepare for remote learning.

As a school, we were trying to gather materials for our students to pick up. Basic materials such as markers, crayons, glue, paper, and other supplies so they could have something to take home. However, it was revealed to us that one of the members in our school community tested positive for COVID-19. Our staff rushed to get everything together in that one day, and we were never able to give our students what they needed to take home.

We didn't even have the chance to say goodbye to each other properly in person. That was taken away from us unexpectedly and there may never be an opportunity for us to be together as a class again. The decision has been made to close schools for the remainder of the school year.

My Project

Our kids have been stuck at home since mid March when we transitioned into remote learning. Although it wasn't the ideal learning situation, we made the best of the unfortunate situation. The gloomy weather in March and all those April Showers made it seem like we were not missing much of what was going on outside.

Those April Showers has brought the beautiful May Flowers and each day that passes seem to get brighter, sunnier and harder to stay indoors.

While some may have the backyard space to get fresh air outdoors, many of our city children are living in small NYC apartments with only a few windows to gaze into the outdoor concrete jungle.

I am requesting soil, pots, seeds, and a gardening book to give my students a hands on learning opportunity and engage in indoor gardening.

During our remote learning sessions, we've looked at the different kinds of food that have seeds and saved them to plant. While a few students were able to engage in this activity, many did not have the necessary materials to plant indoors. I am hoping to make the best of our remote learning circumstance and give our children experience in home gardening and allow them to learn to grow seeds from food or scrapes from vegetables.
