My Students
My students are faced with many challenges outside of the classroom and see many things that 5 and 6 year-olds should not be exposed to. My goal is to provide them with a safe and warm environment, where the only challenges they face are academic ones. Teaching in a low poverty/high needs school can present many challenges when it comes to making the classroom as inviting as it should be.
The students I teach come to school not just to learn, but also to receive hugs and attention that they may not get at home.
Some come to school hungry, and the only meals they eat are the breakfast and lunch provided by our school. No matter how much they need, they are open to learning and love to laugh and have fun while working hard. I hope to provide them with a classroom that feels like home, especially to those who don't have a warm and loving environment elsewhere.
My Project
Our students come to school without basic organization materials such as pencil cases and book holders. Our school is a Title 1 school and doesn't provide students or teachers with some basic school supplies or even snacks. The students have to eat lunch at 10am and get hungry by afternoon. Snacks help keep them focused and on task, just like being in an organized space.
When basic needs are met, students can succeed!
By making sure no one is hungry or spending all of their time searching for a book or sharpened pencil, we can spend time learning.
