Home Away From Home - Military Kids Classroom

My Project

My biggest dream in life has always been to become a teacher. I was blessed to always have such amazing, wonderful, caring teachers growing up and I knew from a very young age that I wanted to follow in the footsteps of those that had shown me what it is to truly love and care for a child through education. After marrying someone in the military and having three children who are growing up in the military community, I realized that not only did my passion lie in becoming a teacher, but to become a teacher in our local military community.

Everyday I get to witness the wonder, adventure, and resilience of kids who have lived lives so different than most.

I get to have a hand in making them a home away from home in this unpredictable and busy life. To do this, I want to have items to make our classroom homey, comfortable, and inviting with seating and lights. I plan to use things like drawing paper, the printer, journals, and printer paper to find ways to connect to their homes and roots. I plan to use the sensory and fidgit items and flexible seating, bands, and cushions for those struggling with change to feel more comfortable in the room. I plan to start a classroom library with the books so that kids can check out a familiar or fun title in the stress of life. White board items, binder tabs, the timer, and graph paper will make our math & science lessons flow smoothly ensuring our classroom is calm and easygoing. The glue, printer ink, and lined paper will supplement our supplies.

I am excited to be on this journey and hopeful to have items that make my kids feel just a little more at home.
