Help me give my students books to read at home. Reading at home is just as important as reading at school. My students are in need of books at their level for their homes.
As a reading specialist, I work with struggling readers for grades 2-5. Many of my students come from low income families and homes where they may not have all the supports they need due to heavy responsibilities, not sure how to work with their children, or not having the time. Our fifth grade students are at the age where they understand that reading groups mean that they might be behind. Some of our fifth graders don't like coming with us or lack the motivation, because they may be embarrassed that they have to come with us. Many of them are hard workers, but need that extra push to meet their goals before leaving us for middle school! Our kiddos really need your support!
My Project
Reading at home not only sparks a love for reading, but helps students with remembering what they have read and reading fluently. Many of the books chosen to send home with our students are more geared toward boys. I find that many of our books are not at our boys' and some girls' interest. Many books that I have chosen are not only more of interest to our students, but also at a level at which they can be confident in reading.
Many of our students may not have their own library at school and while school is not in session, may not have books that motivate them to read.
My hopes is that these books will give them the motivation to read when away from school, igniting their passion for reading.
