My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty district with 71% of our high school students eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch programs, I find that my students are faced with many challenges. Many are routed to the high school from a very rural setting, often sitting on a bus for more than an hour in the morning before they arrive at school, ready for their classes. Despite these challenges, they are, however, motivated, creative, insightful, and determined to not allow any of the challenges they may face hold them back from reaching their full potential.

Our public "small" high school in Oregon supports the dream that ALL students graduate ready to pursue a post-secondary education and become life-long learners.

Our small school model is driven by students establishing a positive, engaging, and inclusive community where they can explore their interests in interdisciplinary classes that encourage relevant and hands-on learning opportunities. In order to provide the tools necessary to become successful citizens in our globalized and technologically advanced world, we often look to outside funding to provide necessary resources to further their education. Thank you for taking the time to get to know our amazing students.

My Project

My students often struggle to conceptualize how the structure of DNA is formed, how it is replicated, and how it is transcribed to become proteins. By having manipulatives at their disposal to create DNA strand models, they will have a hands-on opportunity to explore how the structure and function of DNA are related. Additionally, I use an iPad and desktop software to display and interact with information through my projector. A case is needed to help protect the unit as I move about the classroom, and a fine-tipped stylus will allow me to interact with diagrams of DNA from anywhere in the room. Finally, students will use large Post-It pads and notebooks to take notes, identify parts of DNA, and collaborate with their groups to fully engage with the material.

Your generous donation will greatly increase engagement and content retention during our genetics unit.

My students will greatly benefit from these materials for years to come!
