My Students

Salvaged pages tells the story of teens during the Holocaust. My students will be able to supplement their reading of Night with other teen diaries that deal with the Holocaust. I want my students NEVER TO FORGET what happened!

Our school has a very limited number of books in the library.

When students are asked to do research on the Holocaust, there is not enough books available for them to use. There is not even one copy of Salvaged Pages. With a class set, our school would be able to share them amongst the other English classes. At my school, I am the teacher that is designated to sign up guest speakers for our Holocaust unit and with the addition of this text, I'll also be able to share materials with my colleagues.

My Project

Teenagers in general, and not just my students, need to have more empathy and understanding for other people. All too often, it is easy for them to hear, say, and laugh at racial jokes or other offensive attacks on other people. Through awareness, students will better understand how that can lead to more serious attacks on other people. With more information, my students are better able to make better decisions. With other teens diaries, my students will be able to learn empathy for the things many teens went through during the Holocaust. With a class set of this text, we will be able to read numerous first hand accounts to supplement our reading of Night.

This project is so important for me because the first time I taught it a student told me the Holocaust didn't happen.

It was when I was finishing up my six-week unit. I couldn't believe that if he had doubts, I couldn't erase them. Because of that moment, I knew I needed to learn more, enhance my teaching, and do everything in my power to make the Holocaust come to life for my students.
