I am a high school World History teacher. I am teaching a new course at our school this spring called Humanities which will study the Holocaust and genocide in depth. We will examine human behavior that leads to ethnic hatred and intolerance. Since this is a new course I have very few resources for the students. I have some of my own personal resources and a couple of class sets of some books, but I need some films and a set of texts for the class. I recently took a workshop with Facing History and Ourselves and used a book called HOLOCAUST AND HUMAN BEHAVIOR. This is an excellent resource book for the class and I would like to have a class set of 30-35 of these books. My first class this spring will have 28-32 students enrolled.
I also need to buy 15-20 films to use to help teach this important topic. I visited the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in the fall of 2001 shortly after 9/11. The experience was life-changing for me. Since the experience I have attended numerous other workshops on the subject and have recently completed coursework to add social studies to my teaching license because I truly believe that our students are a generation that needs to hear these stories. They are living in a world where people attack and kill out of religious and ethnic hatred. I do not think this topic can be adequately taught in only a couple of days in a normal classroom setting. I want to become a Holocaust educator and conduct workshops throughout NC schools and I believe these resources will help me to help students at my school as well as others in the future.
