My Students

My students come from a low income rural where the majority of them are experiencing hardships at home. School is their safe place and often their escape, a place where they can feel valued and their voices heard.

Despite the challenges many face at home, they come to class excited to read the latest book and work through their emotions through writing!

I'm hoping to share the love of reading with my nonreaders and allow student choice to help them find the power in reading!

My Project

"To forget would be not only dangerous but offenssive; to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time." (Night, Elie Wiesel) In an effort to provide my students choice and a fuller picture of the Holocaust we will be doing a book club with the focus of the Holocaust, survival and the power of hope. The funding of this project would allow my students to have a deeper understanding of the time after reading Night as a full class. This would allow for a paired text analysis along with interdisciplinary work as they learn about WWII in history!
