Holocaust and Genocide

My students need books about genocides around the world both past and present.

My Students

Our students think that an injustice not being able to get more money for a pair of shoes. They think that discrimination is a word they hear on the news every time there is a police shooting. Our students do not truly understand what injustices have gone on and are still going on in the world.

Our students come from poverty.

Our school is considered 95% free and reduced for lunches. My students are surrounded by people who do not put an emphasis on school. They are kids who want to get our of their situations, but have so much pulling them down. So we work every day to make learning fun and exciting using what bare essentials we have in our classrooms. Our students THINK that they know what sadness, pain, or suffering is like, but they only know it from their own lives.

My Project

With this project, our hope is that our students will learn that there is mass suffering of a magnitude they can't even imagine outside of their little worlds. Students will use these books to get a better insight to what goes on during a genocide and what they people go through. They will use these books as background knowledge as they create individual final projects for our Genocide Unit. We hope to instill in our students a desire to make our world a place where discrimination and prejudice isn't tolerated.

These books will open my students eyes to the horrible injustices that happen in other countries.

It will hopefully make them aware of how to change injustices within their own communities, neighborhoods, and school.
