Holiday Dinner Baskets For Students Struggling With Food Insecurity

Help me give my students the items needed to build the children's treats bags that accompany our dinner baskets and the soup that is added as a supplemental meal to the holiday dinners provided.

My Project

Each school year, my students work together, fundraising through bake sales to raise money to build holiday dinner bags for each person in our district suffering from food insecurity. The dinner bags include a full holiday dinner (a turkey with all the fixings and dessert), along with a few other food items such as oatmeal and soups. They also include a handwritten holiday card and a box of homemade holiday cookies.

Each year, our goal is to feed at least 85 families in our district or around 325 people total.

The students plan each step, giving them the opportunity to learn key organization and leadership skills that will help them inside and outside of the classroom.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them the materials needed to help facilitate feeding their community. The reusable bags allow not only the transportation of the holiday meal to each family but also double as a green alternative for future use. The juice boxes will help build our snack bags which are given to every family with young children.

Food insecurity is considered a psychosocial stressor that negatively impacts mental health, leading to increased levels of psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, shame, and stress.

What makes my French students so very special is the fact that each and every one of them makes it their personal goal to have this initiative be a success. Some students bake, others work the table at the bake sales, and many stay after school multiple days to help pack the bags with love and care. Each student has such a big heart and wants to do their part to take care of their community.
