My Students

The school library is a busy space, serving all 800+ students who visit with their language arts classes every three weeks. The library's doors are open all day, including at lunchtime when 50+ students play cards and chess, and use the library's computers for typing, coding, and homework.

My students are as diverse as the city.

Students come from all corners of San Francisco, from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. The students are city-savvy, taking public transportation and enjoying the many shops and parks in close proximity, both before and after school. They're middle schoolers, though, which means sometimes they act more like second graders! They're between childhood and adolescence. Their bodies are changing, and so are their minds. They have lots of energy and are enthusiastic - a noisy combination!

My Project

Our students deserve a quiet, inviting library space. The library is a large room with high ceilings, a wall of windows, and linoleum flooring. The busy street just outside is bustling with cars, buses, and emergency vehicles. Add several dozen middle schoolers to the mix at any given time and, at its quietest, the library is still a noisy place. Traditionally, libraries and bird calls are at the lowest levels of urban ambient sound (recorded at a 40 decibels), but I wouldn't be surprised if we've reached aircraft carrier deck levels (140 decibels), on occasion. Some people can hear a pin drop and others will tolerate loud heavy machinery. Some of our students are sensitive to levels of loudness and the library should not trigger their anxiety!

By placing area rugs in the library, sound will be absorbed rather than echo off our hard surfaces.

Aesthetically, rugs will divide the space visually and anchor our casual seating area. Rugs will add texture and a sense of warmth, which will create an even more welcoming environment for all students visiting the library in this busy, urban environment.
