My Project

50% of the students at our school come from low income families. I can teach them a craft. I can quiz and test them on lighting instruments, the parts of the stage, the plot of a play, and the correct notes to sing. But I cannot teach them how to yearn for magic, they do that already. I can see it in their faces, a desire to belong to something, a truth and concern for each moment in time.

Being involved in the process of creating art has the potential to do more to prepare a student for life than anything academic ever could.

Every day at work, I get to be a part of my students' journey to foster creativity and gain confidence, both on the stage and off of it. I get to be a part of watching them learn how to persevere, how to problem solve, how to hold themselves accountable. I get to watch them learn to get used to the idea that when they engage in creating something collaboratively, that their actions affect other people.

Technical theatre can involve more prominent aspects like sets & lighting & sound, but also things like publicity design. My tech theatre students are hard at work designing the program for our upcoming high school production, and there are some items they need to create the most professional playbill they can. Sometimes the simplest requests can make the biggest impact, and these __ staplers fit that bill. They will be used directly by our tech students within their publicity design curriculum.
