Nearly 600 students in grades 1-3, aged 5-8, attend our public primary school in southern Maine. The area is economically depressed, with many children depending on school breakfasts and lunches to supplement their diets. We are a designated Title I school.
Our school is moving towards individual and differentiated instruction.
Our population is very diverse. Student movement within the classroom to help focus their attention, thus increase their learning is crucial in today's classroom.
I have 18 smart, energetic second graders that deserve opportunities that will enrich their learning environment!
My Project
I am requesting 6 Kore Wobble stools for my students to use throughout the classroom. Gently rounded ergonomic base allows you to move and flex without leaving your seat. This movement provides both physical and mental benefits to the students. While the students are moving, they are more focused on their work. Students can sway and wiggle while sitting in these stools and not disrupt the other students. Studies show that children, especially those with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, tend to move around more when they are using working memory to solve problems. The upshot is that fidgety behavior in children may look like distraction but can actually facilitate the learning process by helping them maintain focus.
A colleague of mine has similar seating options in her classroom.
I'm amazed watching how movement facilitates her students to be more focused and on task!
My goal is to have alternative seating and desk to meet the needs of every child in my classroom.
