Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an elementary PE teacher for CPS at Cooper School, which is located in the Pilsen neighborhood. The school is mostly Hispanic and 97% low income. It is an older school and so things are often breaking down. Therefore, extra equipment is not a priority. This is my second year at Cooper and the children are wonderful. They have not been exposed to a lot of sports, other than soccer. AND, the fitness level is quite low. I am trying to introduce them to as many activities as possible to increase their knowledge and get them exercising. They are always so excited to learn new things. Hockey is a sport the kids are curious about and would like to learn about. Some watch it on TV, but not many. It would also help with teamwork and sportsmanship. I would need 30 youth hockey sticks and 2 pucks. At least for the first year, we would introduce it to all classes, so it would benefit about 700 students. I know my students would greatly appreciate this contribution as they could learn, and have fun with, a new sport!
