My Project

I am a 5th grade teacher at a Title 1 school and have been for the last 11 years. The area that I teach in is a very diverse, and impoverished area, and the school has a 100% free and reduced lunch population. Many of the students that I teach do not have transportation and have not been out of their immediate area, therefore lack exposure to many things outside their immediate environment. As their teacher, I strive to provide them with hands on learning, materials, activities, field trips, and anything else I possibly can to help them learn how to become kind, loving, caring, empathetic, and productive human beings. I am extremely passionate about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) and of course reading. All of the supplies, classroom furniture, snacks, etc., will directly benefit my students through the project-based learning activities we are taking on such as Ecosystems/Earth's Spheres, Dissecting pumpkin- students each get a pumpkin, and they get to estimate the weight, height, circumference, number of seeds, if it sinks or floats, and then we actually dive in and find the actual measurements of each. Salmon raising and release - each year for the past 5 years our school has participated in the local Salmon in the Classroom Project where we receive eggs from the local hatchery, raise them from eggs to alevin to fry, and then we take a field trip to the local creek where we participate in cleaning up the stream and surrounding area (collecting trash), identify macroinvertebrates in the local stream to determine the quality of the creek water, learn about overfishing, and how ecosystems are connected. Snacks are for students who cannot afford to bring a healthy snack to school and will be provided for long testing days for all students.
